Deep within the ancient, sun-dappled jungles of India, a young boy named Mowgli grew up among the wild creatures. Raised by a pack of noble wolves, he ran on all fours, climbed towering banyan trees, and swam in the cool river pools. He was a boy of the wild, completely at home under the jungle canopy.
Mowgli's best friends were Baloo, a giant, fun-loving gray bear, and Bagheera, a sleek, wise black panther. Together, they taught Mowgli the sacred Law of the Jungle.
"Listen to the wind, Little Brother," Bagheera would whisper as they leaped through the branches. "Watch the shadows, and always respect the creatures who share these trees."
Baloo taught Mowgli the practical side of jungle life. He showed him how to find sweet wild honey inside hollow trunks, which roots were delicious to dig up, and how to speak the languages of the birds and the monkeys.
"The jungle will always provide for a boy who listens," Baloo boomed, splashing happily in a shallow river.
One afternoon, the peace of the jungle was threatened. A fierce tiger named Shere Khan returned to the valley. Shere Khan did not respect the Law of the Jungle and wanted to rule over all the animals by force. The wolf pack gathered at Council Rock, worried about the safety of Mowgli and the jungle.
"Mowgli must learn to stand strong," Bagheera said. "A human boy has a fire inside him that no wild beast can match."
Mowgli did not want to hide. He gathered dried branches and struck two stones together, just as he had seen travelers do from a distance. A brilliant, crackling flame leapt to life on his wooden branch. Mowgli held the torch high, its golden light casting long shadows across the clearing.
When Shere Khan leaped into the council circle, growling fiercely, Mowgli stood his ground. He waved the crackling torch, its warmth and bright light driving the fearful tiger back into the dark depths of the forest. Shere Khan realized he could never defeat a boy who possessed the spirit of the jungle and the power of fire.
The animals cheered, and Mowgli was declared the protector of the jungle. He chose to remain under the green canopy, living in harmony with Baloo and Bagheera, a brave boy who kept the ancient forest safe and peaceful for all its creatures.
